Why We Need To Move: The Positives Behind an Active Lifestyle

Posted on April 12, 2015 by Dr. Hal Edghill, D.C.

body in motion flexibilityThe eternal debate with our selves – how to get moving when we haven’t been moving anywhere for a while. Tried getting back into exercise before but the body just did not want to cooperate. Things hurt and discomfort was the result of our efforts.

Easy to see why we gave up, eh?

Well welcome to a new world of exercise and how to embrace the positives that you might have missed the first time through!

First off, let’s settle on the terms that getting into shape is going to take some plain old “roll up your sleeves” type of work. There is no easy route to fitness but it doesn’t have to be painful either.

Now if you find that you like the exhausted agony of throwing your body across the finish line, that is always an option but not the type of exercise we’re talking about today.

strength training is essential part of exercise regimineThe general philosophy we are using is that we want to get body parts moving again. Develop some muscle tone and discover the joys that regular exercise provides.

Exercise makes you feel younger
As you have read in earlier articles, there is a Life force that many of us like to refer to as Vitality. With exercise a part of an overall healthy lifestyle, that engine of energy within us grows. You feel stronger and engage people and situations that you once avoided. No matter what your age, exercise ends up making you feel more youthful.

Exercise can help you live longer
While it can’t reverse all of the effects of aging, regular exercise has been found to support the function of cells such that degeneration is slowed or reversed. Add to this that quality of Life (you feel so much better) is also improved, it’s an invitation that is hard to turn down.

Exercise improves libido
An exercise program improves blood circulation throughout the entire body, thus positively affecting all of our organs – both inside and out. Coupled with the improved mental outlook that naturally comes with exercise, it is a win-win situation.

With the addition of a strength training regime, muscle tone and flexibility increases and your posture develops into a much more comfortable alignment. If you’re sitting up straighter, you open up the abdomen and chest such that breathing is easier, you get more oxygen to your brain, and you feel better than before. Positive reinforcement builds on a good thing.

Exercise improves sleep
With all of that oxygen and really good natural mood enhancers (endorphins) flowing through your body as side effects of exercise, is it any wonder that we sleep so much better? Add in this quality rest to the rest of your regime, is it any wonder that we just feel better?

These are just a few of the good things that exercise brings about in our bodies and minds. There are many more.

With so many positive things going for it, getting up off the couch and getting out to move can certainly be a doable addition to anyone’s lifestyle. Spring has arrived, so get out and celebrate by moving!

“I’m not telling you it’s going to be easy, I’m telling you it’s going to be worth it.”
