Advocating For Yourself: Being an Educated Consumer

Posted on June 8, 2015 by Dr. Hal Edghill, D.C.

informed decision knowledge powerHave you ever stood in the store aisle trying to decipher the ingredient label on a product?

Did you put the item in your cart with a whispered hope that the ingredients would not significantly harm you or your family? Don’t you hate feeling that way?

Product companies are not likely to help us make informed decisions anytime soon either. Remember how the FDA required companies to provide labelling with nutritional and ingredient information? We ended up with the unintelligible words and numbers that you were difficult to decipher. What are they hiding behind these labels?

Want to get empowered? Let’s change this situation on the marketers and take charge of what we buy and consume!

learning knowledge informed decisionLearn All You Can

The most powerful thing we can all do is educate ourselves. The language that is presented by product manufacturers is intended to show their wares in the best possible light. By disguising or minimizing ingredients, a product can appear safer than it is.

Discover your world.

  • Understand that sugar goes by MANY names on a label.
  • Understand the components that make up that cold medication.
  • Find out how that dietary supplement can interact with other medications you may be taking.

You have at your fingertips, a profoundly immense learning tool called the Internet. Use it.

Give voice to the skeptic inside of you

“If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Questioning assumptions is a founding concept of Science. It is also works well when evaluating sales pitches.

knowledge is powerWhen you have knowledge of a situation or product, you can better evaluate it. If the information you have doesn’t ring true when you examine it, you have your answer.

Remember, we are the consumers and our collective voice is powerful. Marketers prefer we be ignorant and pliable. The choice is ours.

Understand that we don’t always understand

Remember how reading that product label made you feel?

We are allowed to feel dumb, especially in light of all the new terminology that industry likes to invent so that we don’t understand what we are buying. They meant to do that.

As with so many things in Life, we can’t always control events but we CAN control how we respond to them. Engage your buying choices. Know that manufacturers do not have your health or best interests in mind when they sell products. Learn as much as you can and use that knowledge to make wise and informed decisions in your Health and the Health of your family.

Please let me know your thoughts on the matter. I’d love to hear from you.

“The voyage of discovery lies not in seeking new horizons, but in seeing with new eyes.”
– Marcel Proust
