Bewildered by the competing claims on skincare products? Each promising miraculous results but not really delivering when you lay down the bucks?
There is an easy and affordable solution: Work from the inside out.
Here’s how.
Your skin is the largest organ of the body and as such, responds to all of the things that keep any organ in our bodies healthy.
- Good Nutrition
- Plenty of Water
- Exercise
- Quality Rest
Your skin, as the organ whose function is so readily visible, shows the world just how you care for yourself. Makeup and skin products can hide imperfections or amplify aspects of your skin for the short-term but ultimately your skin is a big tattle-tale. It just let’s everyone know how you take care of yourself, so why not broadcast a Healthy message?
Good Nutrition
We truly are what we eat and for healthy skin (and a Healthy body too), you can’t go wrong with a fair representation of fruits and vegetables in your diet.
These powerful components of your Healthy diet pack a lot of bang for the buck when it comes to Health benefits. Anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber all help with body Health and are reflected in a Healthy complexion.
Consuming these foods with as little processing as possible will give you the full benefits that each can provide. And don’t forget playing with your whole foods! Blending gives you all of the benefits with nothing left out and juicing gives you the concentrated power of those Healthy foods.
For us non-vegetarian folks who also enjoy eating, fatty fish like salmon, and unsaturated oils like olive oil, help with a Healthy complexion by providing some essential fatty acids that nourish so many body cells. Essential fatty acids are extremely important to obtain through your diet because the body cannot produce them on its own. Besides, they also add some great flavor to your food!
Plenty of Water
Hydration goes way beyond athletic or warm weather concerns. As your body is primarily made of water, the presence of water in adequate quantities is essential to the proper functioning of your cells.
Skin is actually where a medical test for dehydration takes place. The doctor pinches up some skin on the back of your hand and if the skin remains “tented up” after letting go, the diagnosis of dehydration can be made.
So make water intake a daily priority. Your skin will show its appreciation by showing fewer wrinkles and generally looking more youthful. Honest.
Exercise
Getting your body into motion promotes blood circulation that in turn keeps cells and tissues healthy. As you can tell from our human blush mechanism, there are A LOT of blood vessels in the skin. Since blood brings nutrition and oxygen to the skin cells, as well as takes waste products away from these same cells, getting the blood flowing with regular exercise is a win/win.
For those concerned about the aging aspects of sun exposure, sun blocking agents are readily available but keep in mind that a certain amount of unadulterated sun exposure (about 20 minutes a day) helps with the skin’s synthesis of Vitamin D. We can get some of Vitamin D through dietary sources but natural production is free and easy to obtain.
Quality Rest
Regular good night’s sleep continues to play a very large role in your Health. There is an intrinsic mechanism in all of our cells that works on repairing the daily damage when we put the body to rest for those special 6-8 hours each night.
Skin cells are no exception. Regular rest allows for natural processes to take place that revitalize the function (and appearance!!) of your skin.
So if all of this information sounds vaguely familiar, it should. There is no special dietary or lifestyle choices that are specific to skin. What good things you do for your body are good for all parts of your body. Everything is connected and Health comes from your thoughts and actions. Your skin just likes to show these off to the world to see!
“First, I eat healthy; it comes from the inside out. If you eat right, your skin, hair, nails will look good. The same if you have negative thoughts – they can give you a bad look, too; we reflect what we eat and think. We also taste and smell what we eat. Being happy and doing what I love really reflects.”
